Grade 6 Band

Grade 6 band is for any student who has not played a wind instrument before. Students can play flute, clarinet, alto sax, French horn, trumpet, trombone, and baritone. For students wishing to play percussion some piano experience or percussion lessons are strongly advised.

After the student has had one year of class lessons, or has satisfactorily completed the beginning book, he or she is eligible for membership in the more advanced group. Ability to sight-read music, knowledge of musical terms, playing in tune, understanding rhythm, proven spirit and good behaviour are factors upon which the student is evaluated.

Several clinics will be made available in early September to help students get a “quick start” on their instruments.

Parents of beginning reed players should aim for a 2.5 reed, and keep about 3 on hand.  Buying a pack of 10 is definitely cheaper though, and sure to get you through a significant portion of the year.

Grade 7  Band
and 
​Grade 8 Band

Upon completing Grade 6, students are eligible to join the grade 7 Band,  and Grade 8s the Grade 8 Band. These bands meet both inside and outside the school timetable. 

Membership in these groups offers students expanded opportunities for musical advancement, social experience, and the thrill of performing music of all 
types.

Jazz Band

Jazz Band is also offered at Colquitz Middle School and gives students the opportunity to study different styles of jazz music. This band is only open to those students who take part in Senior Band. The exception to this is guitar and piano.  

School Rentals

Some instruments are available to rent directly from the school at a reduced cost for families in need.  All instrument rentals through the school must be secured with a post-dated cheque.  Thank you for keeping our inventory secure!
